NADRA declares digital CNIC equivalent to physical CNIC

National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has announced that the digital Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) has the same weightage as a physical CNIC.
According to the sources, most of the organizations, institutions, and firms demand original CNICs and refuse to accept digital CNIC as proof of identification.
NADRA said through its statement that this practice is contradictory to the general legal and regulatory framework. NADRA further revealed that digital identity terms were constituted in the NADRA Ordinance, and digital identity is legally covered through sections 9 and 10. These regulations define digital IDs as valid proof of identity. This also helps to protect the personal data of citizens and people have to struggle in long queues to obtain duplicate CNICs if their CNICs are lost or snatched during a snatching attempt. All the Government and Financial institutions, and telecom operations are supposed to ensure full implementation of these directives and failing to do so, the citizens can register their complaints through NADRA’s complaints system.
