Was Iran planning for intercontinental ballistic missiles experiment to hit US cities?

Its widely circulated on social media that Iran has readied intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) to strike major cities of the United States has been debunked by experts and intelligence estimations.
The propaganda, which emerged on April 26, 2026, used recycled video recording of detonations to falsely suggest that Tehran had been preparing long-range missile since long for attacks on the US surface. Analysts and reports from the defence intelligence agencies have confirmed that Iran currently does not having operational ICBMs.
As per the claims of defence experts, Iran’s missile has limited capabilities to a range of approximately 4,000 kilometres, which allows it to hit the target locations within the Middle East and European parts but not the United States.

This false narrative has gained traction at a sensitive time, as shaky ceasefire efforts continue in the ongoing 2026 US Iran conflict. Several Iranian facilities have been hit by US and Israeli strikes, while Tehran has responded with missile shoots aimed at regional positions.
Spectators say such propaganda campaigns can further increase tensions and obscure diplomatic efforts. They stress the significance of verifying content, particularly during periods of heightened geopolitical uncertainty, where false claims can quickly escalate doubts and uncertainty.

Despite its growing missile programme, Iran has strong focus on medium- and intermediate-range ballistic systems, which can play a central role in its regional defence strategy. However, the absence of proven long-range Inter Continental Ballistic Missile ability means claims of direct threats to US cities remain unfounded.
Analysts warn that the circulation of such propaganda during ongoing dialogues could damage trust and disrupt attempts to stabilize the region.
